Friday Farewell

Friday was our last day of sightseeing. Our last night in this hotel. We all liked the hotel--especially the breakfasts served buffet style in this courtyard area and the fish pond. The kids got to feed the fish on our last morning.
Our first stop on Friday was the White House. You are not, however, allowed to have a camera or really anything besides your government issued photo ID. Not even a comb. We couldn't quite figure that out. What can you do with a comb? The self-guided tour was nice. We went through the East Room and several of the colored rooms on that floor--the Red Room, the Blue Room, etc. There was just something special about being where all that history has taken place. I am happy to say that the White House is very well kept-up. After that excitement we made a quick stop at our hotel to gather our tourist trappings and then we took the Metro here:
One of our first stops was a building commemorating women in the military. Our middle daughter had just done a report on the WASPS so we enjoyed seeing the displays.
Here are some items that were just found in the desert in 2005. They belonged to a woman pilot who went down in 1944.
We then saw the graves of President Taft, and John, Robert, Edward, and Jacqueline Kennedy all the while enjoying the beautiful setting. From the Kennedy's graves you have a great view of Washington DC.
Next we headed through the lovely flowering trees to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

It is guarded by the military 24 hours a day.
We found the memorials to the crews of the Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia and then left. We enjoyed lunch at a California Pizza Kitchen and then began the trek to the memorials without a very close Metro stop.
First, we went to the Jefferson Memorial right on the Tidal Basin. We followed the path from there to the FDR Memorial which is interesting. Instead of a statue in a building, it is a series of outdoor rooms depicting the different parts of his presidency. There are waterfalls and quotes etched in the walls along with some statues.

Here the girls are with a statue of Fala, FDR's dog:
Our feet seemed to not be as exhausted as they had been on some of the earlier days so we hiked to the White House to at least take some pictures of the outside. Note the two men on the roof. Secret Service?
We had a great, memorable trip and I think we'd all like to go back someday. Our flight home on Saturday was uneventful. It was nice to be home again and reunited with Emmy!
