Smithsonian Thursday

The first stop for most of us on Thursday was the Air and Space Museum. It was hubby's favorite destination. It was interesting to see the many planes and spacecrafts. Here is a picture of Amelia Earhart's Vega:

And lo and behold, here she is with the girls.

I got excited in the gift shop when I saw these Spacefood Sticks. I remember eating them as a child. I don't, however, remember them being good enough to pay $3.00 for one!

We headed to the Washington Monument around 12:30. Hubby got up early and made it in line at about 7:30 to get us tickets for the ride to the top. Tickets were handed out starting at 8:30 and there weren't a lot of choices left by the time he made it to the front of the line.

It was super windy by the monument (see the flags) and apparently it usually is. We saw many people chasing their baseball hats while we waited to go through security and head up.

The views were great!

Here is one of the buildings we saw. We toured through it the next day. You can also see the U.S. Capitol and memorials.

I don't have good pictures from the ride down, but the elevator has some glass in its doors. You don't see outside, but you see stone blocks that have designs carved in them. They are protected from the elements by facing into the monument.

The next stop was the American History Museum. We ate lunch there. It was a bit overpriced as expected, but it was convenient. Then we got to see one of the exhibits I'd been looking forward to--Julia Child's kitchen. Here is the pegboard wall that she had in her kitchen. Her husband traced around the pots and pans so she'd know where they belonged.

We moved on to the First Ladies Inaugural Gowns. This is Martha Washington's.

And, of course, Jackie Kennedy's.
The most recent addition, Michelle Obama's.
No visit would be complete without seeing Dorothy's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz.
Here are Archie and Edith's chairs from All in the Family. Remember that show? I wonder if it is out on DVD.
Friday on to the White House and another very beautiful place.
